As winter bears down upon Lexington, now is the time to get ready for winter weather conditions. Following these tips can help you to be ready when the cold, snow, and ice come our way.
- Familiarize Yourself with the Snow Plan – You can find information about each route’s snow plan by visiting that individual route page and clicking on the “Snow” tab. A quick rule of thumb is that stops with the snow flake symbol are served during snow plan. If your stop doesn’t have this symbol, it will not be served.
- Dress Appropriately – To travel safe during the winter months, dress in layers of warm clothing and be sure to have a hat/hood and gloves. There may be delays with poor road conditions so appropriate footwear can help when waiting in snowy or icy areas.
- Be Seen – During dark mornings and evenings, it is important to be seen heading to and waiting at your bus stop. A pedestrian light, flashlight, or reflective clothing can help signal to the bus driver that you are there. If these are unavailable, wearing light-colored clothing can be helpful. If waiting at a shelter it is helpful to safely step forward when the bus is approaching to ensure the driver sees you.
- Wait in the Right Spot – During poor weather conditions, bus stops may be snow or ice covered. Stay back from the curb and avoid standing in deep snow banks. Drivers are trained to look for passengers in cleared areas nearest to each stop. Also, be aware of slippery conditions when boarding the bus.
- Plan Extra Time – Poor road conditions effect all traffic on the roadways. Allow yourself extra time in your commute and prepare yourself for delays in service. Know ahead of time if your normal stop is on the snow route or if you may need to find the next nearest one.
- Download the MyStop Mobile App – MyStop Mobile is available in the App Store and the Google Play Store. By downloading this app your can receive notifications of the activation of Snow Plan or any service delays. You will also be able to get real time information about where you bus is located if conditions are causing slight delays.
- Stay Connected – Follow us on social media (linked in footer) for up-to-date information about snow plan activation or service delays.
