Lextran wins federal grant to fund purchase of eight new CNG buses and upgraded infrastructure.
LEXINGTON, KY. (AUG. 16, 2022) — Lextran was awarded $6,359,880 in federal dollars under the Federal Transit Administration’s Low or No Emissions grant program to purchase eight compressed natural gas (CNG) buses and to upgrade CNG infrastructure at their Loudon Avenue maintenance facility.
Lextran’s award was one of 150 funded projects of 530 eligible applications for the Fiscal Year 2022 Low or No Emissions and Bus and Bus Facilities programs, a program funded by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
“With this award, Lextran will become an even more reliable and climate-friendly option for the community,” said Jill Barnett, Lextran General Manager. “Replacing eight diesel buses with low-emissions CNG will help modernize the Lextran fleet and combat climate change, a major focus of the Biden Administration, while also providing additional training to Lextran employees who operate and maintain the fleet.”
In addition to replacing the eight aging diesel buses in Lextran’s fleet with new 40’ Gillig CNG models, this project will fund facility improvements for in-house maintenance of CNG vehicles.
Federal funds are also included to expand CNG fueling infrastructure, thereby increasing the capacity for CNG buses in the Lextran fleet. This grant award also provides funds for workforce development and training, specifically targeted to the maintenance of CNG vehicles.
