Through a collaboration with RATP-Dev, Lextran is proud to offer Wheels, a shared ride, door-to-door public transportation service for Lexington-Fayette County citizens with disabilities. This program supplements Lextran’s fixed-route service by providing accessible transportation options.
Wheels operates throughout Fayette County every day, 365 days a year.
The service hours are:
- Monday – Friday: 5:21 am – 12:30 am
- Saturday: 5:23 am – 12:30 am
- Sunday: 5:41 am – 9:30 pm

Eligibility for Wheels
To qualify for Wheels, you must complete an application and have a healthcare provider complete a Healthcare Verification Form. Eligibility determinations are processed by BIOKINETIX. Eligibility decisions are made within 21 days of receipt of a completed application by the applicant and healthcare provider. If you do not receive notice of a decision within 21 days, you will be provided presumptive eligibility to schedule and use the service on the 22nd day until a final determination is issued.
Eligibility Appeals Process
If you do not agree with a paratransit eligibility decision, you have the right to appeal the adverse decision. Appeals can be held in-person, over the phone, via Zoom, etc. To the maximum extent feasible, Lextran will ensure that that the members deciding appeals were not involved in the applicant’s initial eligibility determination. Appeals must be made in writing and must be received within 60 days of the determination. Individuals that request an appeal with receive a written notification of the decision, with reasoning, at the conclusion of the appeals process. Lextran will grant current customers/recertification applicants temporary paratransit service during the appeal process if a completed Hearing Request form is received by Lextran within 10 calendar days of receipt of a denial letter. Lextran does not offer temporary paratransit service to new applicants during the appeal process. If an appeal determination has not been made within 30 days of your appeal hearing, Lextran will provide you with paratransit service from the 31st day until an appeal decision is made.
Fares and Scheduling
Fares
- The complementary paratransit fare is $1.60 each way. Premium trips cost $2.00 each way and occur when the origin, destination, or both are outside of three-fourths (3/4) of a mile of a Lextran fixed-route.
- Wheels collects exact cash, checks, or pre-sold passes when boarding.
- One personal care attendant (PCA) rides free. If space is available, companions can ride with any passenger at the same rate per person and should be requested when scheduling. All attendants and companions must have the same origin and destination.
Scheduling a Trip
- Trips can be scheduled by calling Wheels Dispatch at (859) 233-3433. Reservations are accepted as early as 14 days in advance or as late as 5:00 pm the day before trip is to be scheduled.
- Have the following information available:
- Name of passenger, day and date of your trip
- Exact street address of pick-up and destination locations
- Requested pick up or appointment time
- All pick-up times are scheduled in half-hour time frames.
Cancelling a Trip
- Reservations should be cancelled as soon the passenger knows the trip cannot be completed. Reservations should be cancelled by calling Wheels Dispatch at (859) 233-3433 as soon as the passenger is aware the trip cannot be completed. An excessive number of late cancellations or no-show violations (cancellations after 4:45 pm the day before a scheduled trip) may lead to suspension.

Lextran Yellow ID Card
- Wheels riders can utilize Lextran’s fixed-route service at no charge with a yellow ID card that is issued at the Downtown Transit Center.
- After receiving a Wheels approval letter, contact the Lextran Compliance Specialist at compliance@lextran.com or (859) 255-7756 for instructions on obtaining a Yellow Card ID.

Visitor Eligibility
- Visitors to the Fayette County area who are unable to use the fixed-route bus service because of their disabilities are eligible to use Wheels. Visitors must either present documentation that they are eligible for ADA paratransit service in their home area or document their place of residence and the limitation that prevents them from using the fixed-route bus. The Wheels transportation program will provide paratransit services to visitors for any combination of 21 days during any 365-day period beginning with the visitor’s first use of the service. To use paratransit service beyond the 21-day period, the visitor must apply for eligibility.
